Gun Control Target Practice

Dave M September 22nd, 2008

Gun control has suddenly emerged as the toxic issue of the 2008 presidential campaign, endangering Barack Obama’s appeal among Democratic blue-collar and labor union households.

The freshman Illinois senator has a long record of favoring gun bans in Chicago and Washington, D.C., and a raft of other gun control bills that are anathema to gun owners, hunters and sportsmen alike.

He insists now he supports Second Amendment gun rights to keep and bear arms that the U.S. Supreme Court upheld when it struck down the D.C. gun ban in June. But he refused to join 77 of his colleagues who signed a friend of the court brief to end the weapons ban and remains sympathetic to a broad range of gun ban statutes.

Yet the Obama campaign has been running ads in key states with large populations of gun owners and hunters, insisting he supports the right to own a gun. He cannot run away from his record.

These Words Speak For Themselves

Dave M September 20th, 2008

Who said it?

“I am consistently on record and will continue to be on record as opposing concealed carry”
-Chicago Tribune 4/27/04

“I think we have two conflicting traditions in this country.” (gun ownership and restrictions of guns).
-Politico 2/11/08

“So it’s not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them.”
-April 2, 2008

Barack Obama, of course. Many people across the country have no idea how dedicated this man is to removing guns and ammo from the hands of hunters and sportsmen. Don’t even mention personal defense.

  • Obama voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sports shooting.  (United States Senate, vote no. 217, S. 397, July 29, 2005)
  • Obama voted to uphold local gun bans and the criminal prosecution of people who use firearms in self-defense.  (Illinois Senate, SB 2165, vote 20, March 25, 2004)
  • In his only two votes on confirming Supreme Court nominees, Obama voted against two of the five justices (Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito) who later affirmed an individual right to keep and bear arms in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller.

Let’s see what Joe Biden has to say:

“I’m the guy that originally wrote the assault weapons ban that became law. Then we got defeated. Then Diane Feinstein went to town on it and did a great job.” — Senator Joseph Biden, CNN/YouTube 2008 Democratic Presidential Debate, Charleston, SC, July 23, 2008

“Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.” — Senator Joseph Biden, then-chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in an interview with AP on November 18, 1993

Scary. These words speak for themselves. Please vote.

Obama Votes for Bans on Hunting Ammo

Dave M September 3rd, 2008

Did you know that Senator Barack Obama has a voting record that is consistently against your 2nd Amendment rights?

In 2005, he voted in favor a ban - nearly all rifle ammunition used for hunting and sport shooting. He also believes that semi-automatic firearms, the most popular type of firearm today, should be illegal.

This position puts Obama squarely at odds with over 75 percent of likely voters. The problem is that most of them don’t know his record.

Obama gets an ‘F’ rating from the National Rifle Association, and claims that small town voters are “bitter and cling to things like guns and religion.” Just look at the difference between the Vice Presidential picks:

Sen. McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is a NRA Life Member and hunter who says, “I support our Constitutional right to bear arms and am a proponent of gun safety programs for Alaska’s youth,” adding “I have always strongly supported the personal use of fish and game by Alaskans.  I grew up hunting and fishing in Alaska, and I am proud to raise my children with this same uniquely Alaskan heritage.”

NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox says “Governor Palin doesn’t just talk about supporting the Second Amendment, it’s part of her life, and she did her part to vindicate the Second Amendment for all Americans when Alaska joined 30 other states in signing a legal brief supporting Heller’s challenge to the D.C. gun-ban.”

As for Joe Biden, from Delaware, the Brady Campaign sums it up in a straightforward enough fashion, saying, “Senator Biden has been a consistent supporter of the Brady Campaign,” and “Senator Biden was a key player in the fight for the federal assault weapons ban that passed in 1994.  He also worked hard for passage of the Brady Law (sic).”

In fact, Biden introduced an “assault weapons” ban in Congress five years before the Clinton gun and magazine ban was imposed.  In 1989, Biden’s Senate Bill 1970 proposed to ban the Colt AR-15 and eight similar firearms as “assault weapons,” and authorize the Secretary of the Treasury (in reality, BATF) and the Attorney General to recommend to Congress any other firearms, regardless of type, to be banned as “additional assault weapons.”

As lead sponsor of the Senate crime bill to which the Feinstein gun ban amendment was attached, Biden was instrumental in the passage of the 1994 Clinton gun and magazine ban.   Biden reiterated his support for the ban—and, in fact, took credit for authoring it—in response to a question at the CNN/YouTube debate earlier this year (to view the video, please click here).

Biden voted for the ban on a stand-alone vote in 1993, and voted to extend the ban in 2004 as an amendment to the “Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.”  He also included a renewal of the ban in his crime bill last year, along with gun show restrictions.

Currently, Biden’s S. 2237 proposes to renew the Clinton ban on roughly 200 makes and models of semi-automatic rifles, shotguns, and handguns on the basis of things like the shape of their grips, and on ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, regardless of the kind of firearm in which they are used.

As if that’s not enough, Biden voted against the law that prohibits lawsuits designed to bankrupt law-abiding firearm manufacturers and dealers.  He also refused to sign the Congressional brief in Heller, and voted to confirm only one of the five justices who ruled in favor of the Second Amendment in Heller, yet he voted to confirm all four justices who voted against the Second Amendment in that case.

To put it simply, Gov. Sarah Palin would be one of the most pro-gun vice-presidents in American history, and Joe Biden would definitely be the most anti-gun.

Fred Thompson’s 2008 Republican National Convention Speech

Dave M September 3rd, 2008

The following is a transcript of the speech that Senator Fred Thompson delivered to Republican National Convention on September 2nd:

Tonight our thoughts are still with our friends and fellow citizens in the Gulf Coast area, and our thanks go to those who have worked so hard to keep them safe. There can be no more important work than this.

But what we are doing at this convention is also important to our country.

We are going to nominate the next President and Vice President of the United States of America.

We do so while taking a different view of our country than that of the other party.

Listening to them you’d think that we were in the middle of a great depression; that we are down, disrespected and incapable of prevailing against challenges facing us.

We know that we have challenges … always have, always will.

But we also know that we live in the freest, strongest, most generous and prosperous nation in the history of the world and we are thankful.

Speaking of the vice presidential nominee, what a breath of fresh air Governor Sarah Palin is. Continue Reading »
